It was a crisp, November evening outside of Scotland’s capital Peak District photographer. The rugged surroundings of Arthur’s Seat were bathed in a burnt orange glow from the day’s golden hour a warming smile of comfort from the setting sun. For some, it would have been just another pleasant evening, but, for Karo and Sam (and their dog Mellie), it was a joyous moment of intimacy where they got to soak up the glorious surroundings and let me capture the love they share with one another.
Karo first met Sam when she was travelling around East Germany. She was exploring both the world and herself. Looking for the next path her life would take. An introverted photographer trying to find her way, she was guided by happenstance and fate towards a street musician on the streets of Dresden, who immediately caught her attention. Sam. But, as with all things in life, there’s a difference between seeing a door and opening it – fortune had brought her so far but Karo needed to take the final step herself if a new journey was to begin. Courage mustered, caution thrown to the wind, she approached the charming busker and offered her services giving backup vocals at one of his next gigs as a way of starting a conversation.
Path found the door opened, Karo’s new journey had begun.
Soon after, Sam and Karo moved to Sweden where they built a home for themselves in a woodlands cottage. She quit smoking, he took up music full-time, and their day-to-day lives became something out of a fairytale. Nothing seemed like it could improve. But, the couple decided to make an addition to their home and get a dog. With little knowledge about dogs and less experienced, they let fortune guide their way again. After hours of searching online, they came across Mellie. A golden retriever/labrador mix, who was in need of a new home.
So, with bags packed and the car loaded, they drove ten hours south, back into Germany, to start another journey with a third member in tow. The three now live in Scotland; Sam continues working as a musician, Karo continues her photography as she studies for a degree. Mellie continues to be the little, big bundle of joy that once ate exclusively out of the plant pot.
Knowing Karo and Sam’s story, it makes perfect sense that they would choose Arthur’s Seat as a location for their photographs. They love to be around nature. There are also few cities finer than Edinburgh that captures that idyllic blend. I loved working with Karo and Sam because both are effortlessly approachable; I felt like I had known them for years and could still talk to them for hours without getting bored. A pleasure to work with, a joy to be around. I can’t wait to find out what the next journey they take is.
